Trinity College Dublin, University of Dublin was established by a royal charter in 1592 during a time in Western Europe when the existence of a university was thought to increase the prestige of a state. Trinity College was the first, (and still is) the only college of the University of Dublin, which makes these two names synonymous with each other.
Today, Trinity is Ireland's highest ranking university. It has around 17,000 students, a 51-acre campus with a large number of buildings with historic architecture and state-of-the-art modern facilities. The University has produced many world famous names like writers, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett (Nobel laureate); scientists, William Rowan Hamilton and Ernest Walton (Nobel laureate); political thinker Edmund Burke’ and the former President of Ireland and UNHCR, Mary Robinson.
