Saint Mary's College of California was established in 1863 as a boys-only diocesan institute by the Most Rev. Joseph Alemany, a member of the order of preachers and San Francisco's first archbishop. Saint Mary's College of California relocated twice between 1863 and 1928 primarily from its initial location in San Francisco to Oakland and eventually in 1928 to its current location in Moraga. Saint Mary's College of California switched from being a male-only school to a full-fledged coeducational liberal arts institution in the year 1970.

Students spend their first three years at Saint Mary’s taking physical science, mathematics, humanities and social science courses. The final two years are completed at an engineering school approved by the program’s director. Upon completion of all academic requirements students are granted two degrees: a bachelor of arts from Saint Mary’s College and a bachelor of science in engineering from the university they have chosen for completing the final two years of the program. The full range of engineering specializations can be studied, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
