Warren Wilson College went through many phases before becoming what it is today. Its property, situated along theSwannanoa River, was purchased in 1893 by the Women's Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church, which was concerned that many Americans in isolated areas were not receiving a proper education and decided to establish church-supported schools in impoverished areas.

I grew up in a family of twelve children in rural East Tennessee. I did not realize that the Appalachian poverty was holding back kids, like my siblings, who had great potential until I arrived at WWC. There I began to study at a level never before expected of me. I succeeded in the academics and best of all, learned just as much through the work program where life-long vocational skills were taught in a no nonsense manner. The small enrollment allowed me access to all faculty with tutoring, encouragement and a family atmosphere. At WWC I gained a strong foundation for life-long learning and an expectation that one gives back to the community to make it better for others. I still love Warren Wilson College. Go Owls!

Several things made the Warren Wilson College experience help change my life...first was the individual attention I received inside and outside the classroom, second the constant and new experiences I got a chance to be involved with as part of travel and the work study program, and last but not least was having such a fun loving diverse student population. People care at WWC and it changed my life by giving me the confidence and education I needed to be ready to face the challenges and opportunities of the world!

The triad program (service learning, work program and academics) is dynamic and transformative, as are the small rural and natural campus and community, professors, students, small classrooms and course content. I owe WWC for significantly impacting my life in numerous positive ways and opening up opportunities to me that would not have been there without its education.
