University of Denver (DU), founded in 1864, is the oldest independent university in the Rocky mountain region. The University was founded by John Evans, the then governor of the Colorado Territory along with the backing of local businessmen and the Methodist Church. The University was originally established as the Colorado Seminary. Even today, the University embraces the principles and traditions of the Methodist Church.
Since its establishment, DU has had a hand in the cultural, social, economic and educational life of the city of Denver. DU’s goals centre around creating a diverse community, providing an exceptional educational experience and providing research and scholarship opportunities across the university. The Carnegie Foundation has termed the University as research university with high levels of research activity.
