School Description

University of Alberta was founded by two ambitious men: Alexander Cameron Rutherford, the first Premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, a McGill University professor who became the University of Alberta’s first president. The University Act was passed in 1906 by the new government of Alberta and this paved the way for the official opening of the University in 1908.

The University saw many challenging times with the First World War; the influenza epidemic; the Great Depression, the Second World War and most recently it was affected by the series of cutbacks introduced by the Government of Alberta. The University nonetheless persevered through this all and today, it boasts twenty-one faculties; sixty-four departments; over 3,200 academic staff and over 36,000 students, a fourth of which represent 130 countries from around the world.

Fond memories & a good base

The Univ. of Alberta is where I began my liberal education so to speak. It was the first time I got to take a class of my choice that was unrelated to my major (Classical Greek mythology was the class I took as a Masters' student in microbiology) and where I learned first to work (and play) with computers), the darkroom (mostly obsolete now) and to write a thesis. After an initial false start, it was also the place where I found my first mentors with whom I"m still in touch - well at least one of them. While I'm not sure it's a long term destination for me (winters still too cold and I think I need more cultural diversity) It played a vital and early plan in my academic life and I owe it a great debt of gradtitude. Oh and beautiful medical library.
