School Description

Staffordshire University was founded in 1914 with the vision to be modern, relevant and vocationally inspired; this same vision carries on today. The University initially challenged and pushed the mining and ceramics industries forward but today it focuses on everything from Computer Games Design to Forensic Science.

In the 1960s Staffordshire became the pioneers of Computing teaching in the UK. In 2013 it signalled its intent to become a UK Centre of Excellence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) with the launch of its flagship Science Centre. The Science Centre houses all of the University’s science teaching and research endeavours across forensics, environmental and biomedical sciences, as well as psychology and sports science and biomechanics.

Some notable Staffordshire alumni include John Mayock, Athlete and Olympian; David Bolt, Academic specialising in literature and disability; Ian McMillan, Poet; Jermaine Allen, American football running back and Paul Reilly, Computer scientist.

          • 1979-1983, Bsc(Hons)

I studied here donkeys years ago, when programming involved loading your software via punched cards. Now over 30 years on, I still earn my living from technology and the software may have changed from COBOL & Fort ran to JavaScript & P Hp, but the underlying principles are still based on the the course I took at Stafford all those years ago!

          • 1993-1997, BSC (Hons)

I studied Computer Science at the Stafford Campus. On my first visit and seeing the Octagon I knew that this was the university for me. The lecturers are some of the finest and most knowledgeable in their field and I am forever grateful for their help, mentoring and motivation techniques that they imparted on us students. I wouldn't be where I am now without them.

          • 2011-2014, BA Hons Photojournalism

Through studying Photojournalism I learnt much more than how to take amazing pictures, or how to get work published. I learnt how to communicate to an audience through a considered combination of visual, written and spoken media. I learnt how to speak to people and listen to their stories, and I learnt how to tell these stories to other people. Stafford shire University was a brilliant place to learn these valuable and transferable life skills, the area has a rich history and Staffs Uni is obviously very proud of Stoke-on-trends heritage as well as it's own. I would recommend this university, I would recommend photojournalism as a course, and I would definitely recommend a full English breakfast at the Pavilion. Top notch.
