When I was deciding which university to attend, there were two essential qualities I was looking for. I wanted to pursue an undergraduate degree in the health sciences and I wanted to attend a school where I could compete on a varsity Nordic ski team. The best school with that combination was right in my hometown of Thunder Bay! I know now that this decision was the right one.YYIn addition to varsity skiing, I have been a part of a number of exciting initiatives at Lakehead. One included travelling to Sandy Lake, a remote aboriginal community of Northern Ontario to conduct a sports program for youth. I also served as Vice-Chair of the NaHSSA Chapter at Lakehead (National Health Science Student’s Association) and in this capacity I was able to bridge collaborative events to more students in the future.YYThe most unique quality of Lakehead University is the sense of community. Staying in my hometown to attend university has allowed me to form many new friendships while maintaining old ones. Best of all, I have access to high quality education in the beautiful northern city of Thunder Bay!

"I chose Lakehead University because it's close to home, and it was the perfect place for me to continue to develop my skills and knowledge and meet great people. Anthropology is a very diverse, broad field and the small classroom sizes are advantageous for in-depth discussion and presentations. I love that anthropology is a big mix of disciplines! Anthropology is the study of humankind in the context of time and culture, and so much more.YYOutside of class, I occasionally contribute to the student newspaper, the Argus, and I am looking forward to being even more involved with Orientation this year, as a student ambassador! Within the city, I enjoy good company, biking and walking on the trails, swimming at Hazelwood Lake, seeing wildlife at Mission Marsh, going to see the occasional bands at Kilroys and the Apollo, and checking out new art at Definitely Superior Artist Run Centre.YYMy advice to future students is to be involved with the whole process of applying to university, making choices and taking things into your own hands, and this way it will make the experience even more personal!"

When I was considering attending Lakehead University, I remember speaking to the dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources Management, who told me “if you want to be anonymous, don’t come here.” Those words stuck with me, and when I visited Lakehead University for the first time, I knew it was the school for me. YYA big part of obtaining a post-secondary education is about the connections that you make while working towards your degree, a central focus of the one-of-a-kind Natural Resources Management Program. For students who love the outdoors and want to make a difference in the responsible management of natural resources, this program is one to consider. What I like most about Lakehead is the close-knit school community, the open door policy with professors and the practical, hands-on learning afforded by our faculty.YYThunder Bay is a fantastic place to go to school, with all the amenities of a large city, yet a very supportive, active community and unparalleled outdoor recreation just minutes from the downtown. Opportunity knocks everywhere around campus—whether volunteering for one of the many student societies, participating in off-campus field trips or working alongside professors and graduate students, there is a myriad of learning opportunities outside the classroom, which is the real draw for students. After completing the program, I will be very well qualified to obtain work in the natural resources field or to further my studies in graduate school. The opportunity to learn in such a supportive school community where everyone is committed to seeing you succeed makes Lakehead University a cut above for those seeking a unique and fulfilling post-secondary education.
