Jackson State University (JSU), located in Jackson, Mississippi, in the US offers more than 90 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs ranging from Art to Urban Studies, through its colleges of Business; Liberal Art; Education & Human Development; Science, Technology & Engineering; Public Service; and School of Lifelong Learning.

School Description

Jackson State University (JSU) was founded in 1877 by the American Baptist Home mission Society “for the moral, religious and intellectual improvement of Christian leaders of the colored people of Mississippi and the neighboring states.” The school moved to its present location in Jackson in 1899 and a result changed its name to Jackson College.

Between 1953 and 1956 Jackson expanded its curriculum to include a graduate program and undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences. The College was renamed Jackson State College in 1956 (owing to the fact that the college was supported by the state). Jackson received university status in 1975 and in the 1979 it was officially established as the Urban University of the State of Mississippi.

Today, Jackson State University is a public, coeducational institution, supported by legislative appropriations supplemented by student fees and federal and private grants. Some of its notable alumni include: Walter Payton, NFL Hall of Fame; Tonea Stewart, actress, In the Heat of the Night, A Time to Kill; Rod Paige, former US Secretary of Education; and Cassandra Wilson, Grammy award-winning jazz artist.
