School Description

Cardiff University, founded in 1883 and was formally established in 1884 when it was granted a Royal Charter. The University was originally named the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire and started out with 13 faculty, 102 full-time students and 49 part-time students. At the time, Cardiff University was also established as one of the founding institutions of the University of Wales. In 1972 the institute was renamed as the University College, Cardiff.

Cardiff merged with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (in 1988) and the University of Wales College of Medicine (in 2004). In December 2004 Cardiff was granted university status and subsequent to this, it changed its legal name to Cardiff University; that same year, it also became independent of the University of Wales.

Cardiff University has two Nobel Laurates; Professor Sir Martin Evans was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2007 for a series of ground-breaking discoveries concerning embryonic stem cells and DNA recombination in mammals; and Professor Robert Huber, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1988 for the determination of the three-dimensional structure of a photosynthetic reaction centre.
