School Description

Bard College was founded in 1860 as St. Stephen’s College. It was founded by John Bard with the help of the Episcopal Church, and in its first 60 years, its purpose was to prepare men for entering the seminary, but also encouraged them to enhance their intellectual skills. After 1919, the college began to transition and expand its curriculum, and in the 1930s became the first college in the United States to give full academic status to the study of the creative and performing arts. The college was renamed in honor of its founder John Bard in 1934. During that time, the college became populated with writers and intellectuals who were fleeing Europe. In 1944, the college started welcoming women for the first time, as students and faculty.

Today, Bard College has nearly 2,000 students, with international students accounting for 24%. Bard College has many campuses in the United States and around the world. The college’s international reach started in the 1990's with the creation of a program called the International Liberal Education, which was created with the mission of building international education partnerships. Some of the places that Bard has a partnership with include Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Germany and the West Bank. Some notable Bard College alumni include, actor Chevy Chase, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist William Sherman, and six musicians/songwriters.
