School Description

The Peralta Community College District, established in 1964, is a system of public two-year colleges, serving the residents of the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Piedmont, Emeryville, and Albany. It consists of four colleges—College of Alameda, Laney College, Merritt College, and Berkeley City College (formerly Vista College)—and one community education center at Fruitvale operated by Merritt College. During fall 2010, the four Peralta Colleges served 28,803 students; about 79% of known ethnicities are minorities.

The Peralta Community College District is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees elected by the public within the district boundaries with 2 student members sitting on the board.
