School Description
Miami Dade College (originally called Dade County Junior College) opened its doors in 1960 to its first class of 1,400 students, on a land that hosted a World War 2 air station. The aim of Dade County Junior College was to change its student's life through accessible, high-quality teaching and learning experiences. The College completed its first building, the north campus, called Scott Hall in 1963 and a few years later in 1968 the College split from the Public School system and was governed by its own District Board of Trustees. In 1973 Dade County Junior College was renamed to Miami Dade Community College.
In 1985 the college celebrated its 25th Anniversary and with this milestone, it added another by becoming the first community college in the United States to have graduated 100,000 students. Today, Miami Dade College has received a Smithsonian award for technological innovation, opened the Tamiami Aviation Center, enrolled its one-millionth student, graduated the Colleges first MDC students with a Bachelor of Science degree and in 2010 opened the Confucius Institute.
