School Description

George Brown College's history started in the year 1951 when it was first opened as the Provincial Institute of Trades by the Ontario Government to provide veterans of the second World War skilled training. As the province established a new college system, the institute expanded its programs in 1967 and subsequently opened as George Brown College. Its namesake, George Brown, was a politician and newspaper publisher of the 19th century who strongly believed in public education and was an essential figure in the formation of Canada. Through the years, George Brown College became a significant contributor to various economic sectors by providing learning opportunities in soft skills development, field education, and applied research, doubling its size and broadening international partnerships by the 21st century.

At present, George Brown College offers a wide range of programs including 30 certificates, 34 diplomas, 31 advanced diplomas, 31 graduate certificates, 6 degrees, 5 pre-college, and 12 apprenticeships to more than 30,000 students, almost 4,000 of which are international students.
