Virginia Tech was established as Virginia’s first white land-grant institution on October 1, 1872. The University went through several name changes over the year. Initially called Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, the College changed its name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College in to 1980s. It changed its name in 1896 to Polytechnic Institute and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1944. Virginia Tech took on its present name Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on June 26, 1970. While alumni refer to the College as VPI, it’s most popular – and official — nickname is Virginia Tech.
Over the years Virginia Tech has grown tremendously. Today, the college has approximately 135 campus buildings, a 2,600-acre main campus, off-campus educational facilities in six regions, a study-abroad site in Switzerland, and a 1,800-acre agriculture research farm near the main campus. The University caters to more than 31,000 students and manages a research portfolio of more than $513 million.

A program in the applied visual arts that focuses on the general principles and techniques for effectively communicating ideas and information, and packaging products, in digital and other formats to business and consumer audiences, and that may prepare individuals in any of the applied art media.
A general program that focuses on the systematic study of the production, conservation and allocation of resources in conditions of scarcity, together with the organizational frameworks related to these processes. Includes instruction in economic theory, micro- and macroeconomics, comparative economic systems, money and banking systems, international economics, quantitative analytical methods, and applications to specific industries and public policy issues.
A program that prepares individuals to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of electrical and electronic systems and their components, including electrical power generation systems; and the analysis of problems such as superconductor, wave propagation, energy storage and retrieval, and reception and amplification.

Most of Virginia Tech’s buildings are made of Hokie Stones, which are actually a native limestones common in Southwest Virginia and parts of Tennessee and Alabama. No two stones are the same color, varying from grays, browns, and blacks to pinks, oranges, and maroons.

I loved the Mechanical Engineering Department. It had a lot of great people. I also spent significant time working for the Computer Science Department, but did not get to know as many people as I was still a student in Mechanical Enginerring. It had very smart people too and I liked many of them. I highly recommend both departments. What I liked the most about Virginia Tech and Blacksburg in general is that it was a friendly place, full of smart people, easy going, down to earth. It had a very stong sense of community. Blacksburg is not very big, but it's much nicer than most towns of similar size: you'll meet many interesting people and the surroundings are beautiful. I'll always feel a strong attachment to that place and the people I met there. Going to VT changed my life for the best, I learned so much there, and not only about engineering and computer science. It was a bit difficult to go back to the real world after that. I live in Sydney, Australia now. Even though there's a lot more to see than in Blacksburg, there are many things I miss about VT. In most places, I wont find so many people who share common interests with me. Finally, I miss the football games too. One of the loudest stadiums ever.
I went to Virginia Tech as an international transfer student from Jamaica. It has one of the most beautiful college campus in North America and the diverse experiences that student acquire there are unquestionably among the best in the world. I will be eternally grateful for the education that I received there.
I cannot thank Virginia Tech enough for four wonderful years. I cannot believe it is my 30th anniversary since graduating in 1985 with a B.S. in Accounting, Magna Cum Laude. The education I received definitely helped prepare me for me for the working world and it also gave a place I can call home.
