School Description

The University of Pittsburg was originally founded as the Pittsburgh Academy in 1787. In 1819, owing to the need of the time, the school was rechartered as the Western University of Pennsylvania. In 1908, the University changed its name the University of Pittsburgh. At the time of the commencement of the University of Pittsburgh, the University awarded just three BA degrees. By 2011 however, this number has grown to 4,212 baccalaureate degrees, 2,315 master’s degrees, 519 doctoral degrees, and 594 doctorate-professional practice degrees.

Today, Pitt is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), which comprises 62 preeminent doctorate-granting research institutions in North America. Over the years, Pitt has produced alumni who have defeated polio, unlocked the secrets of DNA, lead the world in organ transplantation, and pioneered TV and heavier-than-air flight, among numerous other accomplishments.

          • 2004-2009, BSBA & BA, Marketing & Communications

Best kept secret!YOakland and Pitt provided 18-year-old me with the best possible stepping stone to the rest of my life. Ten years ago, I would have never imagined being a "New Yorker" after having grown-up in a small, rural, Western, PA town, but for the last five years, I've called the concrete jungle of NYC home. The time I spent at Pitt helped me form an educational and professional foundation that I've continued to build on. And while I worked hard, Pitt also provided the perfect college atmosphere to play hard, too, with so much to do and see right on campus and very close by. Since I've left, Pittsburgh itself has continued to boom, offering so many amazing opportunities to students and recent grads. I can't say enough about this great university and all it provided me!
