The University of Western Australia was established in 1911 and was the first free university in the British Empire. UWA was established with the help of Sir John Winthrop Hackett, who was passionate in providing a university in Western Australia. UWA officially opened in 1913, welcoming just 184 students, and went through tough times with two World Wars and the Great Depression. But after the end of the second World War, the university saw a major recovery with student enrolments reaching 1000 students. The university kept growing from there, and In 1975, student enrolment reached over 10,000 students. 2012 was a significant year for UWA, it was the year where a new course structure was introduced. The structure followed that of universities around the world; a broad undergraduate degree followed by a postgraduate professional qualification.
The university today has over 24,000 students. UWA graduates include former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, Academy Award winner Shaun Tan, and two Nobel prize winners who later became staff at the university. UWA is part of the Worldwide Universities Network, which is a network made up of 19 research intensive universities around the world who collaborate in addressing many issues that face the world.
