School Description

Mount Royal University was founded in 1910 when it received its charter from the Alberta Government. Classes however commenced a year later with 179 students. During its initial years, Mount Royal offered primary and secondary schooling, as well as courses in commercial and stenographic work, music, fine arts, household arts and physical culture. In 1925 it became a secondary school of the United Church of Canada. Six years later, Mount Royal discontinued its primary school and established itself as a junior college affiliated with the University of Alberta.

Over the years Mount Royal continued to grow and expand, and in 1966 the School was established as a public college when the provincial government passed the Mount Royal College Act. With continued expansion, in terms of facilities as well as courses, today, Mount Royal has almost 12,000 students enrolled in over 50 programs. Although the number of courses offered at Mount Royal have changed over time, it’s focus to provide ‘quality teaching and small class sizes’ remains even today.

          • Testimony
            1984-1986, BA

Mount Royal is a great place to pursue your education. The quality of the programs is second to none. The instructors were excellent, approachable and committed to the student's success. The facilities at the time were very good and the new campus looks awesome. A great experience!

          • Testimony
            2002-2005, BA

MRU is perched ready to become a student centered, lifelong learning venture where students come to be coached and guided on what they are learning outside the 'classroom'. Direct entry from high school students share life and learning with adults reestablishing themselves in a changing world and older adults starting their encore careers. The small class sizes and flexibility of leadership leaves open possibilities for community learning, shared project based 'assignments' and rigorous evaluation and adaptation. MRU is a very good school today but by acting courageously it will become remarkable.

I had a great experience with the computer science department and the instructors, especially (in no particular order) Gerry Cross, Paul Pospisil, and Chris McKimmie. Hope they are still there :)
