John Carroll University (JCU) is a private, coeducational, Jesuit Catholic university providing programs of study in the liberal arts, sciences and business at the undergraduate level and in selected areas at the master’s level.

School Description

John Carroll University (JCU) can trace its history back to September 6, 1886 when St Ignatius College was established. The first class consisted of 76 students and classes were offered in Grammar, Latin, English, Geography, Arithmetic, Penmanship, Christian Doctrine, Bible History, and German. In 1890, St Ignatius College was incorporated under the laws of Ohio and granted the power to confer certificates and degrees.

The 1920s brought some other significant long-term changes to the University. On May 15, 1923, St Ignatius College was renamed Cleveland University and by September of the same year, the name was changed yet again to John Carroll University, named after Bishop John Carroll, the first American Bishop. Today the University enrolls more than 3580 students from 34 states and 24 countries.
