At the Second Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1866, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops first discussed the need for a national Catholic university. At the Third Plenary Council on January 26, 1885, bishops chose the name The Catholic University of America for the institution.CUA's Current total of Alumni exceeds 83,000, including 12 living cardinals.Notable alumni includes: Bishop John J.
