School Description

Carnegie Mellon University was established in 1900 through its donor and namesake, Andre Carnegie, a Scottish immigrant who started as a humble factory worker in a textile mill and rose to become a successful entrepreneur, founding what would later become the largest steel producing company in the world by the end of the 19th century. At the time, the institution first opened its doors as the Carnegie Technical Schools, offering two to three year certificates in the arts and engineering. Throughout the years, it managed to expand and flourish despite two World Wars, and by 1967, it merged with the Mellon Institute to form the Carnegie Mellon University.

Attracting over 13,600 students from 114 countries around the world, Carnegie Mellon University today is composed of 7 schools and colleges through which it offers 77 bachelor's and 147 master's degree programs in areas of engineering, fine arts, humanities and social sciences, information systems, public policy and management, science, computer science, and business. Carnegie Mellon University also offers a variety of housing options for students, with up to 28 residence halls, apartments, and townhouses. Ranked among the top 25 best cities for millennials, Pittsburgh is a budding city home to over 86,000 students and local businesses, beautiful green parks, film production sites, and gread dining options.

Carnegie Mellon is a place that exists only in Pittsburgh and in Utopia. It is brimming with creativity and real innovation in every corner and every dorm room. I was lucky to have been part of this institution and can attest to the change its made to my life - personally and professionally.

          • Testimony
, Recommend Carnegie Institute of Technology

They taught me now to keep learning, and how to sort out complex problems. Just wish I had a computer instead of a typewriter and carbon paper, slide rule and log tables. And they let me finish up at night school while I worked full time at Westinghouse.

          • Testimony
            , Diversity & Interdisciplinary Excellence

I cannot say enough about the unique, creative, and innovative environment at CMU. Undergraduates are encouraged to work together and be involved in their campus community, be it through extracurricular clubs, research, or student jobs. No matter how quirky you might be, there are at least two others just like you who have already started a club. The professors are top notch and always willing to give you one-on-one time. Simply reach out and you will get all the support you need. Every time I go back to the Pittsburgh campus, I soak in the energy and am ready to break technological boundaries once again. There's an electricity at CMU that is maintained by the students, professors, and alumni that I simply haven't found anywhere else. I took it for granted while in school, but am very appreciative of the opportunities CMU has afforded me since then!!
