Program Description

The pre-occupational therapy program prepares students for a career in the occupational therapy field. Students can major in any area of study they choose, but they must complete a certain number and particular types of courses to help prepare them for occupational therapy school. Typically, students complete the program in four years with around 120 credits. All prerequisite courses must be completed.

Students who study occupational therapy learn how to work with adults and children who have emotional, physical or cognitive disabilities. Occupational therapists teach these patients how to function self-sufficiently in everyday activities.

Some classes students are required to take include anatomy and physiology, sociology, psychology, medical terminology and a math class such as statistics. Some courses combine both classroom learning and laboratory study. Students may be given opportunities to observe occupational therapists as they work with real patients, and some may also be able to gain clinical experience before they complete the program.
