          • 1966-1969, BS

My mother hated this conversation, but my Dad used to send me off and say "don't let your studies interfere with your college education!." I am a mother, so I never told my own children that, but in a way he was correct. There is so much more than books at Butler! I was given the shelter to discover myself through my studies, to have professors who knew us by name and willing to be there for any help needed, to access wonderful Clowes Hall, and to become independent. I was from Virginia then and I wasn't one of those kids who could go "home" every holiday. My roommate then and still a friend after all these years, showed me Chicago! And yes, Go Bull Dogs! Butler plays in the Southern League of Schools and there they are----right in my own city playing basketball in Charlotte! I never missed a basketball game........well, I couldn't. The cheer leading uniform is still in my closet!

I obtained my Masters at Butler and loved the smaller class size that was an opportunity to be individually challenged rather than hiding in a large class. My professors made me think about my goals and how to use my skills. Because we gave presentations nearly ever class I became confident in presenting my view and how to map my strategies. In commercial real estate this has come in handy throughout my career. I enjoyed and have never regretted my choice of Butler University. Go Bull dogs!

It's because of Butler's blend of small size, unique offerings and freedom to explore possibilities that I've enjoyed a career in the science museum field. I entered Butler intent on being a crusading journalist, but my first class on my first day changed my course. Astronomy 101 prof Nick Vesper asked if anyone was interested in a part-time job as a tour guide at Holcomb Observatory & Planetarium, and I'd been geeky enough as a kid growing up in Indy to be interested in being close to the one-meter telescope. Gradually, my part-time job evolved into assisting with student research projects, giving planetarium lectures, producing shows and being student manager of the place my senior year. I remained a journalism major, in part because I had a partial scholarship, and because I wasn't entirely sure the planetarium field was a viable future. But, the unique experience I'd gained at Butler was able to allow me to plant my foot squarely in the doors of several planetariums and museums, and allowed me to turn a personal interest into a career path
