Program Description

In today’s technologically advanced and business-centric world, those with sharp analytical skills and the ability to compute and process numbers efficiently may find their calling in the mathematics and economics program at American University.

Defined as the application of mathematic principles in order to develop theories and solutions for today’s economic issues, the mathematics and economics major combines traditional mathematics, statistical analyses and economic principles, as well as some instruction in basic computer science. With courses in both micro and macroeconomics, calculus, statistics, algebra, applied econometrics and more, this program can help you prepare for a flourishing career in the field of applied mathematics and economic theory.

This major requires 120 credit hours as a prerequisite with a minimum 2.00 GPA, 64 major-specific credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.00, and a total of 65 course-specific credit hours—18 for gateway courses, 38 for core classes, and nine for electives courses.
