Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program at American University can prepare students to address complex environmental issues in a scientifically-sound manner. The 62 credits required for the major are part of the 120-credit requirement for graduation with a bachelor’s degree. Most full-time students can expect to complete the program in four years.

This is an interdisciplinary program with a strong foundation in the sciences and an emphasis on hands-on experience. Coursework covers topics like ecology, climatology, and conservation, and helps students develop knowledge of GIS applications, economics, and written communication.

All students complete three credits of experiential learning, which may be in the form of an internship or independent study. The department encourages students to work alongside university researchers to benefit from the expertise of the faculty.

Upon graduation, students can be well-versed in issues like environmental sustainability, biodiversity and climate change. Possible career fields include private and public sector research, environmental law, and public health.
