Arab World Studies
The Arab World Studies program at American University enables interested students to obtain comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Arab world through an in-depth analysis of history, politics, gender dynamics and religion. Required core coursework may focus on world politics, global perspectives and contemporary Middle East issues.
Because the program aims to evaluate the region from broad perspectives and contexts, students may complete courses in methodology, theory, economics, history and gender studies. A diverse list of potential course topics may include political and social research, international relations and social theory, world economics, historical Muslim empires, modern Middle Eastern history, Israeli-Arab relations and race and gender politics. Successful candidates must also exhibit Arabic language proficiency.
