GREEN RIVER COLLEGE
Location: Auburn, Washington (USA)
Student Name: Gabriella Sharon Gozali
From: Jakarta, Indonesia
Expected Graduation: 2018
Favourite class: My favourite class so far would have to be my English class. It is hard and the professor is very particular about what she wants, but the class taught me that in order to achieve something, I have to really work hard for it.
Favourite Event: My favourite school event would have to be Orientation Week. During this time, I made friends with people from all across, I got free food, and I had the opportunity to go camping! Orientation Week may not be listed as an official event, but for me, it was a very big and life-changing event!
Five words that best describe Green River College: Friendly, Fun. Safe. Wonderful, Calming.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your school experiences before joining Green River College.
Green River is big and I would have to constantly look at the campus map so I would not get lost!
I am from Jakarta, Indonesia and I lived and studied in Indonesia for my whole life before I came to the US. I attended a catholic school from preschool onwards and then I studied in an all-girls high school. My school experience was filled with uniforms and studying and it was very big on discipline and punctuality – two qualities that have shaped me to be a good student now.
How did you hear about Green River College and what made you decide to study in the United States?
I have always wanted to study abroad, especially in the US. I worked with an agency to decide which college I wanted to go to, and they recommended Green River College. My family and I visited the college a year prior to my enrolment. The welcome that we received from the Marketing team and all the staff was incredible. The environment was student-friendly, refreshing, and calming. Once I had visited the campus, I knew that I had to come to Green River for my higher education.
What are you studying at Green River College?
I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business, which is why I will be transferring to a four-year institution after I graduate from Green River College. I have always looked up to my parents and I wish to follow in their footsteps. They have always encouraged me to be creative and make my own destiny. After observing their jobs and experiences, I have decided that I wanted to learn more about what they did, which is business.
What were your first few days like at Green River College?
I was a bit confused my first few days at the college. Green River is big and I would have to constantly look at the campus map so I would not get lost! The first time I met my host parent and saw my homestay, I felt nervous. I could not imagine living with a stranger. But now, I feel like this is my home and I am very comfortable.
I remember the first day of class - I was 20 minutes early because I took the bus. I was the first one in the class and I was worried that people would think that I am a teacher’s pet. As it turns out, everyone in the class was very friendly, I made friends with the people that sat around me, and we are all still friends until now.
Did you have any problems adjusting to life in a new city and college?
The biggest problem I had when I first came to Green River College was homesickness. After my parents dropped me to school, I missed them very much. Fortunately, I live in a homestay and my host was very caring. She gave me the support that I needed and was not only a second parent, but also as a friend. The faculty and staff at Green River were also always wonderful. They were there if I needed someone to talk to about my problems and they made sure that I didn’t feel alone. The friends that I have made also helped me to overcome my homesickness. They always make sure I am having fun and enjoying my experience at Green River College.
What was your experience like as an international student, both academically and socially?
My experience as an international student in Green River College has been wonderful. The professors are very helpful and I made a lot of friends by joining various clubs and student activities. Green River has numerous facilities, such as a gym, student union, and library.
Green River also assigns an advisor to each student based on their selected majors, so they can help plan academic agendas. There is also a program called Foundation for Success that helps international students learn what it’s like to live in the US.
Green River College is not far from the airport, and it is also close to a shopping mall and great restaurants. My friends and I like to eat at the teriyaki restaurant nearby or go shopping in the outlet store in Auburn. On some weekends, we take the train or bus to Seattle and explore the area.
