Earn Class Credits While Learning English

As English is often times not every student’s first language, many international students are required to take English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at university to help them improve their English language skills. Many universities offer these classes in the form of remedial, non-credit classes at an added cost. Dean College, however, has established the International Student FOCUS Program, where overseas students receive English language instruction and support in classes that earn them college credits that go towards achieving their degree.

Through this program, the basics of ESL – writing, listening, and speaking – are incorporated into special college courses created for international students. The program also includes an introduction to American culture and optional private tutoring. FOCUS consists of three levels, and students are placed in the appropriate section as per their TOEFL/IELTS test scores. FOCUS students are considered full-time students at Dean College and are expected to graduate within the normal timeframe.
