QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS

Favourite classes: My favourite class is Calculus since math has been my favourite subject since I was in the seventh grade! Calculus is such an interesting field of mathematics - it is not only very challenging, but it also plays an important role in its application. We’ve had a lot of fun with mind-bending problems in class and the feeling after solving one was extremely gratifying! Furthermore, my Calculus instructor, Professor Wallinga, has made the class even more interesting with his sense of humour and thoughtfulness at every turn.

Favourite Event: My favourite event at Fisher is Orientation Day, at the beginning of each semester. As a new student, I found this event significantly useful because it helped me get used to college life, as well as, hit it off with many other new students.

Five words that best describe Fisher College: Small, Friendly, Professional, Unique, Safe.

What are you studying at Fisher College?

I’m currently a freshman and I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a concentration in Accounting. Mathematics and numbers have always been my passion, and my mother started as an accountant, and is now a successful CFO. This has inspired and encouraged me a lot, and with this background, I realised that Accounting was the field that I should pursue!

What were your first few days like at Fisher College?

Frankly, I was so nervous before my first class, that I couldn’t sleep at all!  I should not have worried, though, as my first impression of Fisher College was amazing. Fisher has small classrooms, so students have the chance to get involved in class, and professors have the opportunity to get to know their students on a personal level. The communication between professors and students is wonderful since students can either send emails to their professors, or set up a private meeting to ask or express their problems.

Did you have any problems adjusting to life in a new city and college?

To be honest, everything was different from my life in Vietnam. For instance, the weather conditions in the winter are extremely harsh, which I was not used to at all. Also, living on my own brought about new issues, like managing my own finances and balancing my time between studying and other activities. As the days passed, however, I began to adapt to my new life in the US by learning to adjust my routine in order to cope with the pressures of my new environment. Furthermore, I was lucky to have such good friends and professors who always helped me out whenever I needed assistance.

Did you take part in any extracurricular activities at Fisher College?

There are over 50 extracurricular clubs in Fisher and I’m glad to be a member of three of them: Acapella Group, Finance and Investment Club, and Drama Club. Each club has given me a different type of experience.

This is the first year that there is an Acapella Group at Fisher College, and we have done a good job so far with our practices and performances. We even had the amazing opportunity to perform in front of Fisher’s staff and faculty members at their annual party!

I joined the Finance and Investment Club run by Professor Horgan, since this is the field that I want to pursue in the future. This club has been very interesting and enriching for me as it has given me hands on investment experience.

The last club that I am a part of is also the one that I am most proud of, the Drama Club. We performed the musical, The Sound of Music, and it was such an honour to share those wonderful moments, both on and off stage, with the incredible cast and crew who became my second family.

You mentioned working while studying – what jobs have you held while studying at Fisher College?

I am currently working in the Office of Admissions as a Student Ambassador. This experience is the best thing that has happened to me since the day I arrived at Fisher!

It has been a privilege to work with my bosses, the admission counsellors, and my co-workers in the office, who are all students like me. They are wonderful people who have always been thoughtful and kind-hearted, especially when I first started my job in the office. At that time, I was dealing with language barriers and, as a result, I made some mistakes in my office tasks. Despite this, the team has been understanding and have given me advice that has not only made my work-study experience more efficient, but it has made my entire life a bit easier. Most importantly, I have learned a lot from the professional attitudes in the office and how diligently the team works every day – these are skills that will help me a lot in my future career.
