The school supports a well-rounded academic experience and has extensive art, music, theatre and athletic programs amidst its more academic programs.
Location, Location, Location
Shepherdstown is the oldest town in the state of West Virginia, located on the banks of the famous Potomac River in the historic Shenandoah Valley. The small town is a short one hour’s drive from the major metropolitan cities of Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C.
Set apart from busy city centre, Shepherdstown has much to offer its residents. The historic landmarks of Harpers Ferry and Antietam Battlefield are only a short hike away from the university campus. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is just across the river and extends for over 184 miles. Be assured that the town offers more than just well-preserved historical sites; shopping and dining can be easily found in town and the vast expanse of natural beauty encourages hiking and biking through its many trails. There is a lively music and theatre scene complete with performances at Shepherd University and art galleries scattered around town.
Due to its close proximity to large cities, Shepherd University enjoys many guest lecturers and performers, field trips and career opportunities. Students also enjoy a wide variety of internship opportunities in the metropolitan region with prominent employers such as The White House, IBM, Children’s Defense Fund, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and New York Fashion Week.
Living in University Residence
Living on campus at Shepherd University provides amazing opportunities to learn, grow and make lifelong friendships. The staff at the resident halls guide students through their transition to university life and help create a inclusive campus community. Facilities, programs and services are continuously being reviewed and updated and students are empowered to be accountable to themselves as they begin their personal journey into campus life, university academics and extracurricular activities.
Shepherd University will be opening a new residence hall, Potomac Place, in August 2017. The new 5-story, 81000 square foot housing facility boasts 298 beds and numerous modern amenities and services.
The International Student Experience
Shepherd University is proud to offer its Intensive English Language Program (IELP) to students that require advanced English language skills for university-level studies. The program focuses on listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar. This program is designed to help international students excel in their classes and beyond.
With its highly qualified faculty, 90 undergraduate and graduate programs, small class sizes, close-knit community, scholarships and close proximity to three international airports and major cities, Shepherd University offers an ideal option to overseas students looking to study abroad for their undergraduate degrees.
Shepherd University provides numerous opportunities to all it students and it works hard to cater to the interests, ambitions and needs of its student population.
Recently, five Shepherd students from the Departments of Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering participated in the IEEE-WIE Global Women in STEM Leadership Summit in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference comprised of speeches, workshops and discussions on STEM subjects with a special emphasis on women in the computer science and engineering fields.
Currently, a complete inventory is taking place of the trees on Shepherd University’s 325 acre campus by students, faculty and staff. Species, location, height, diameter and condition of each tree will be assessed and documented. This database will be a useful teaching resource and it will help authorities decide what types of trees to plant and where they need to be planted.
Shepherd University conducts projects around campus that involve students applying their skills and expertise outside of the classroom. The university’s Sustainability Site has been decorated with a new railing designed by a recent Shepherd graduate. The design was chosen through a competitive bidding process that helped students understand how this process would work in their professional fields.
Even with all the support and guidance offered on campus, Shepherd University knows that students experience high levels of stress during their final exam periods. To combat this stress, Shepherd offered students “dog therapy” by giving students the opportunity to cuddle with puppies in front of the school library during exam week, demonstrating the positive effects of pets and pet therapy.
