5 Dorm Hacks that will Make Your Room Awesome
Dorms don’t have to be dreary, here are some easy ways to make them a fun space.
Dorms aren’t universally known as the most luxurious housing option out there. Instead, most students are stuck trying to make the best of the situation when it comes to standard university dorm rooms, with their bland walls and prison chic furniture. But there are things that crafty students can do to spruce up their space and make it a place where they’ll want to spend the next four years.
If you’re feeling uninspired by your new dorm room digs, try these awesome dorm room hacks to make your room feel more like home.
Loft Your Bed
Space in a dorm room comes at a premium, so you want to make sure you use it wisely. Some forward thinking universities offer loft bed options instead of a standard bed. If you have that option, always choose a loft bed so that you can use the underneath area for storage, or - if the loft bed is high enough - create a work space underneath. If getting a lofted bed in your room isn’t an option, you can purchase a set of bed risers which essentially act like stilts for your bed, raising it 3-5 inches off the floor.
Dorms aren't known for their expansive kitchens with cavernous storage space. So when you’re a student, you have to improvise. Use a plastic over-the-door shoe holder as a place to store dry goods like pasta, crackers, and other types of foods and snacks that don’t need to be refrigerated. You can also use these handy little things to store personal hygiene products in the bathroom and office supplies near your desk.
Brighten Up The Walls
Painting usually isn’t an option when it comes to giving your dorm walls a pop of colour, but there’s one thing you can do to give your dorm room a little more personality. Use removable wallpaper to add colour and patterns and create an accent wall. Accent walls can help you add some of your own personal style to your dorm room. It’s also incredibly simple to remove once you’re ready to move up and move out.
Frame Photos With Washi Tape
Washi Tape is the latest trend in arts and crafts, but it’s also a lifesaver when it comes to decorating on the cheap. Washi tape comes in a range of colours and patterns, and it works beautifully for framing your favourite photos and creating a gallery wall. It’s a fun way to add some colon to your room, and it’s a great way to keep reminders of friends and family near.
Warm Up Your Space With Layered Rugs
Area rugs can be pricey, and door room carpet (if you end up so lucky), can leave a lot to be desired. To make your space more cozy, find low-cost rugs (like these from Ikea) and layer them casually over each other to cover highly trafficked areas in your dorm room. Layer rugs on the side of your bed, in front of your bathroom sink, and around your desk to make your dorm room feel more lived in.
