Your Home Away From Home

With an impressive modern façade constructed of two-toned blue glass and stainless steel, the Roosevelt University’s Wabash Building is an architectural marvel that also happens to be one of the world’s only college campuses fully contained within a skyscraper. Completed in 2012 and standing 469 feet high, the Wabash Building is the second tallest academic building in the United States. It has almost everything you would expect from a traditional campus, with the significant added perk of being located on the renowned Chicago Loop and overlooking Lake Michigan and its white, sandy beaches.

What Is A Vertical Campus, Anyway?

Space restrictions in urban settings can be challenging for growing universities and it seems the only way for these colleges to expand is to go up! Roosevelt University approached this challenge with an ideal location, an inspired architectural design and a great sensitivity to the wants and needs of its students and faculty. Roosevelt University’s Wabash Building is an extraordinary all-purpose, vertical campus; it rises up 32 majestic stories and is an iconic new landmark on the Chicago skyline.

Dedicated Academic And Social Spaces

The first six floors of the splendid Wabash Building are dedicated to student services and organisations such as the university bookstore, and the offices of admission, registration and financial aid. There is a fitness centre that is free to students, faculty and staff and a beautiful dining hall that accommodates 300 people.

The next eight floors of the building are made up of various classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices of which three entire floors are devoted to science education classes. Professors in the fields of biology, chemistry and physics provided their input and expertise to help design the teaching spaces and research laboratories. The prestigious Walter E. Heller College of Business has also been relocated to the Wabash Building, complete with faculty and administrative offices, lecture halls and a special trading floor classroom that simulates the trading floor of a stock exchange.

Students who gain housing on these floors enjoy jaw-dropping, unobstructed views of beautiful Lake Michigan. There are also 24-hour security measures in place to gain access to the residence halls.  Basic cable, internet and other utilities such as heat and air-con are included in the housing price and state-of-the-art washing machines and dryers are available to students. Dedicated studying rooms are located on each residence floor for students’ convenience.

Green and Sustainable Facilities

Roosevelt University is one of only 10 Illinois universities recognized for sustainability and it was also named by The Princeton Review as one of 322 most environmentally responsible colleges. In accordance with the university’s Strategic Sustainability Plan, there are a multitude of “green” features in the new Wabash Building campus for which it has received a Gold LEED accreditation.

The building’s construction materials contain over 20% recycled content and it has almost 8,000 square feet on its roof areas covered in plants and greenery, lowering temperatures of the building and reducing energy costs. All indoor building materials are non-toxic and there are built-in, tri-sorters with recycling chutes on each floor. To further advance the building’s sustainability factor, the Wabash Building houses an advanced recycling program for paper, plastic and metal and utilises low-flow plumbing devices throughout the campus to increase water efficiency.

A University Where Social Justice Prevails

Roosevelt University was one of the country’s first academic institutions to make higher education available to all students who qualify academically, regardless of their socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, religion, age or gender. These progressive fundamentals continue to form the backbone of the university and the principles upon which it stands.
